Aska Yang

My soon-to-be mother-in-law is obsessed with Taiwanese pop star Aska Yang. She spends hours every day in a chat room on a fan site, and has even gone all the way to Taiwan just to meet some of these other fans. An extra bonus was that she somehow managed to have dinner with Aska himself while over there! Anyway, when I go to Pittsburgh for the wedding next week, it will be my first time in her home. As a gift, I decide to do this painting.

One challenge for me is that I don’t really know what Aska Yang looks like. Photos found on the Internet are often too low res, and since people tend to look different in every picture, it’s hard to know where to start. Stars are often glammed up, and the photos themselves are often touched up, which makes it even more difficult. Since Mrs. Cheung has seen Aska up close and personal, she REALLY knows what he looks like, so there wasn’t much room for error. The other problem is that I didn’t want to work from just one photo because I wanted the composition of the painting to be somewhat original. I’m not worried about using a copyrighted picture for a painting if I am not selling it, but just as a matter of respect for the photographer, I don’t ever like to copy exactly. Also, there were things I liked and things I didn’t in each of the pics I came across. I ended up painting his neck and jacket pretty much from imagination, and I am not really happy with the way they came out. I could have done better if I had more time, but once I get into trying to fix every little thing that bothers me, it never ends. A painting would never be finished if I didn’t force myself to put the brush down and walk away. Overall, I am pretty happy with how the face came out, though. Hopefully, my mother-in-law will think it’s a good likeness. If any of you happen to know what Aska Yang looks like, please leave a comment here telling me what you think.

From My T-Shirt Collection- Cheetah Man

A couple of years ago I was asked to do an illustration for a client. It was to be a comic book cover style illustration of a character his son created. As the drawing was done digitally, we decided to make t-shirts from some of the individual characters appearing in the composition. This cheetah man is one of the main hero’s allies.

I kind of like how small the image is placed on the shirt. It almost sort of gets lost.

This is a color digital transfer that I printed on my Epson 260 Sylus Photo and ironed onto a pretty soft tee from H&M. The color transfers appear more vivid than the regular ones, and hold up better in the wash. Of course they’re more expensive, so it only makes sense to get them if you want to print onto a colored shirt. I may some day do a similar design of an anapomorphic cat super hero type character for the Donkeyshines line. Of course it can’t be a cheetah or that kid might sue me!

Shirt of the Week- Donkey Pegasus

Filed under: Artwork,Donkeyshines Announcements — Ryan Klemek @ 7:50 am

Donkeyshines currently has only one t-shirt design featuring an actual donkey. That design is the Donkey Pegasus, and during the week of April 5-12, you can get it for $16.99.

This design is actually based on an old drawing I used on a t-shirt for a silly joke band I was in, called The Ass. The music is  hard to listen to for anyone who actually wasn’t in the band, but the songs had amusing lyrics. We would sing about movies that we happen to have watched recently that nobody really cared about, such as Untamed Heart (Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater) and A Perfect World (Kevin Costner and Clint Eastwood). We also drew inspiration from nostalgia such as in our G.I. Joe-themed love ballot, Destro and the Barroness.

The original drawing was done in 1994 for our T-shirt. The medium used was colored pencil, and the shirts were made using heat press iron-on transfers. At the time, only 3 were made- one for each band member. Later, I tried to sell the design on merchendise through Cafe Press, but I was the only person who ever bought any of it. I re-used the drawing on the album cover for our 2003 compilation CD, as seen above. I think only 4 copies of that were ever made, since the band had 4 members by then. I currently use the drawing on the Donkeyshines home page.

Monkey and Bulldog Models- Day 9

So the painting is “done”.

jonlorettaday9

“Done” is in quotes because even after I photographed this, I saw something that needed fixing. I made a smoother value transition in the upper left corner of Jon’s shirt. The tricky thing about acrylics is that they look lighter when they are wet, so what looks like a smooth transition now might actually not be. So I will have to wait until later to see if I’ve actually solved the problem. I have to wait until later to actually put it on my scanner, since the paint is still sticky. Ultimately, photos of the painting just aren’t clear enough to use for my product page, so I’ll have to scan it. I think even if that value transition isn’t quite right, I will stop working on this. I’m never going to be completely satisfied with it, but eventually you have to just accept it as it is and move on. See Finished Painting.

Monkey and Bulldog Models- Day 8

I’m getting close now. Hopefully I can have this finished by next weekend.

I’m starting to get used to these paints now. The slow-drying does make the whole painting process take a bit longer. I have to wait for certain areas to dry even to work on other areas because I can’t rest my hand in the wet areas.

I’ve finished Loretta, and just barely started Jon:

I’ve changed my mind about putting this unfinished painting up as the product image. Maybe in a few days. I guess I’m only half done somehow…

Monkey and Bulldog Models- Day 6

I am now 90% done with Loretta:

Really, all I have left is the hair. I wish I had more time to work on it. I’m thinking I will start using this as the image on the Monkey and Bulldog product page once Loretta is done, even though Jon will still be a pencil sketch.

Monkey and Bulldog Models- Day 4

Not much to say except that I got a little more done today:

jonlorettaday4

Now that I am getting the hang of these Golden Open paints, I’m beginning to appreciate their benefits. For one thing, the paints in my palette don’t dry up, so I am not wasting paint. That’s a real plus, as these paints aren’t cheap. It also saves valuable seconds when I sit down to paint because I don’t have to set up the palette each time.

Monkey and Bulldog Models- Day 3

I have now started painting:

jonlorettaday3

Getting this far took me much longer than I expected. I am using these new paints called Golden Open Acrylics, and it is taking some time to get used to them. The advantage is that they dry very slowly, so it’s easier to blend colors and make smooth gradients. What’s difficult for me, though, is that because it dries so slowly,  you can’t put colors on top of each other without mixing them. I have to be careful not to make a big muddy mess. I’m starting to get the hang of it, so hopefully, it will go a little faster now.
