My T-Shirt Collection

Even before I was making my own t-shirts, I was know for having quite an amazing collection of strange tees. The best part about this collection was that all of the shirts were found at the Salvation Army in Latham, NY. Unlike the tongue-in-cheek throw-back references to old pop culture that you find on shirts in trendy stores, the stuff I found at the Salvation Army was genuine and without intentional irony. Some of them were just so ridiculous that it made me really wonder about the shirt’s story. Why was it made? Why did the original owner buy it? Here’s an example:

and on the back:

Clearly, this shirt was printed for some fundraising event in connection with the Saratoga Hospital. Knowing this, however, does little in explaining the imagery on the shirt . What do sharks in a thunderstorm have to do with fundraising? What is supposed to be fun about fundraising and/or sharks in a thunderstorm? Mysteries such as this were why I always felt like an archeologist when I stepped into that Salvation Army. I never knew what strange relics I would uncover.

New T-Shirt Sizes

Filed under: Donkeyshines Announcements — Tags: — Ryan Klemek @ 8:40 pm

Three of our designs are now available in Men’s 2XL and 3XL: Donkey Pegasus, Gorilla and Duck, and Crocodile and Shark. We’d love to offer these sizes for all of our designs, but it may not be possible for a while. Continental, the company that makes the bamboo/cotton shirts we use for some of our designs, currently does not carry sizes larger than XL. Hopefully they will soon. We’re also hoping they add some new shirt colors.

New Uneetee Submission

My latest t-shirt design, entitled Raptors: Then and Now, has been approved by Uneetee.com and entered into their Design Contest. The winner will receive $1000 and have their design printed and sold. Most of the designs submitted are pretty elaborate, and in the past I’ve submitted graphics with multiple colors in order to appeal to the tastes of site’s voting members. This time, however, I wanted to see how my subtle, single-color style would fare against the more complicated and colorful entrees. The good news is that, if it doesn’t win, I can print it myself as-is without having to make any modifications to fit the Donkeyshines style. Check it out, and vote for it if you like it. You’ll need to register with Uneetee to vote, but its a pretty quick and painless process. They have a lot of fun designs, and I think it’s worth being member.

I chose to draw a non-specific bird of prey so I could be free to stylize it any way I wanted. In the case of the velociraptor, I decided to go with the depiction we’re familiar with in pop culture. It is now known that they were likely covered with feathers and were only the size of modern-day turkeys. The real velociraptor was probably not nearly as menacing as they are in the movies, and it would not be as ironic to see one carried off by a lil’ birdie. Although I’d be pretty impressed to see an eagle taking down a wild turkey.
