All primates gaze up at birds in flight and long to join them in the sky. Of all the great apes (including humans), only gorillas have been deemed worthy to learn the birds’ secret of non-machine assisted aviation. Ducks are especially patient instructors, and their feathers make the best learning tools for the gorilla’s first few lessons. Like training wheels, the feathers are eventually put aside once the gorillas have mastered proper arm-flapping technique.
