New Uneetee Submission

My latest t-shirt design, entitled Raptors: Then and Now, has been approved by Uneetee.com and entered into their Design Contest. The winner will receive $1000 and have their design printed and sold. Most of the designs submitted are pretty elaborate, and in the past I’ve submitted graphics with multiple colors in order to appeal to the tastes of site’s voting members. This time, however, I wanted to see how my subtle, single-color style would fare against the more complicated and colorful entrees. The good news is that, if it doesn’t win, I can print it myself as-is without having to make any modifications to fit the Donkeyshines style. Check it out, and vote for it if you like it. You’ll need to register with Uneetee to vote, but its a pretty quick and painless process. They have a lot of fun designs, and I think it’s worth being member.

I chose to draw a non-specific bird of prey so I could be free to stylize it any way I wanted. In the case of the velociraptor, I decided to go with the depiction we’re familiar with in pop culture. It is now known that they were likely covered with feathers and were only the size of modern-day turkeys. The real velociraptor was probably not nearly as menacing as they are in the movies, and it would not be as ironic to see one carried off by a lil’ birdie. Although I’d be pretty impressed to see an eagle taking down a wild turkey.

Why Are We Selling Holiday Cards, Anyway?

I was making t-shirts for myself long before I ever thought I would try to sell them. An example of this is that hand-painted Lando Calrissian shirt I wrote about back in September. These were days when I was a poor art student. At the same time that I was making t-shirts for myself to wear, I was making custom greeting cards for friends and family, since I couldn’t afford gifts for them on holidays and birthdays. I guess I could have made t-shirts for THEM, too, but then you have to know everyone’s size, etc. I would put a lot of energy into the cards, and they were basically little mini paintings. Eventually, I had so many card designs that I decided to try to sell them. The original paintings were all given away, so I either worked with digital scans, or re-made the designs. I had too many designs to be able to afford printing them all in bulk, so I was printing them from my home inkjet printer as each order was placed. I knew that if things really took off, it would be impossible to fill these orders individually by myself. For that reason, I never really tried to expand the business too much beyond a hobby. At some point I realized it would make much more sense to sell t-shirts. Orders would be more expensive, but I wouldn’t need to start with as many designs, and filling orders would be at least a little easier. I made a few t-shirts and sold them alongside the cards for a while. What was making it difficult to fully commit to selling t-shirts was that I just didn’t have room to store a bunch of shirts in my house. A few years later, I discovered Printmojo, and the solution to most of my business obstacles. With them I had a printer, and a warehouse and someone to fill my orders for me. Suddenly, I was able to really get things in gear! I love making t-shirts. I design them for myself, then try to find people with similar tastes who might also want to wear them. This is my approach that has thus far been pretty successful. But then, I started to miss the greeting cards, too, and tried to figure out a way to incorporate them into the Donkeyshines world. There are still some logistics that limit the way I can sell them. For instance, I really need to sell them in 10-packs. People tend not to buy birthday cards and such in bulk, so that is why I have started with holiday cards. In another year, I might add Valentine’s Day cards to the mix, and then we’ll se what happens from there. T-shirts are going to still be my major focus, since they’re just so much fun to make! Anyway, here are a couple of examples of my old greeting cards. Guess what occasion each card was for…

New T-Shirt!

Filed under: Donkeyshines Announcements — Tags: , — Ryan Klemek @ 9:03 pm

If you’ve been reading this blog since it was started back in June, the new Crocodile and Shark design might look familiar:

I took the old Ouroboros design which was previously submitted to Uneetee and revamped it. Why did I change the design? Personally, I prefer a simpler color scheme, and while I liked the old version well-enough, it is more in the subtle style of Donkeyshines now. This design does feature some differences from our other shirts, however. First of all, instead of having separate styles for men and women, we went with a tubular, looser-fitting unisex shirt. This allows us to sell it at a lower price than our other shirts, at just $19.99. It also allowed us to do something that our fans have been requesting for a while now, which is to carry 2XL and 3XL sizes. Hope you like it!

Please Dress Me!

Filed under: Donkeyshines Acknowledgments,Donkeyshines Announcements — Tags: , — Ryan Klemek @ 9:08 pm

There is a relatively new t-shirt indexing site called PleaseDressMe, and these guys are really great. Donkeyshines has 6 of our shirts indexed there, and we featured our Robot Penguin shirt as their shirt of the day this past Friday. I can sit there for hours using their randomize feature to see what fun shirt will pop up next. We recommend you index all of your favorite shirts from all over the net with them so these guys can keep growing.

Kaiju Big Battel

Kaiju Big Battel is a group of wacky monsters hashing out their differences in a wrestling ring. That’s probably the best I can do to explain it. There are live shows all over the country, most often in NYC, and Boston. You… really have to see it to believe it. Check out their site. I’ve done a bit of illustration work for them, but here is a one-of-a-kind t-shirt design I made just for myself featuring one of the Kaiju monsters. This relatively unpopular fellow is called Dai Hachi Hachi. He’s part man, part bee and known for really inappropriate dancing.

I Like Dinosaurs n’ Stuff

Here’s a painting I did for a friend’s X-mas gift last year. Maybe someday it will be put into t-shirt form, but who knows.

The alien is understandably quite afraid of the large animals, but they just wanna play.

Lando

I just recently dug out this old t-shirt that I made 14 years ago! It’s hand-painted in acrylic directly onto the shirt. I’ve always been afraid it would get ruined if I washed it too often, therefore I only really wear it for special occasions. That generally means midnight premier screenings for Star Wars, general sci-fi and other movies that geeks get excited enough about to wait in line for hours to see before anyone else. In case you don’t recognize the guy on the shirt, that’s Billy Dee Williams, a.k.a Lando Calrissian. Lucas never thought Lando deserved his own shirt, so I had to make one.

Call for Photos!

Filed under: Donkeyshines Announcements — Tags: — Ryan Klemek @ 6:46 pm

One of the things that sets Donkeyshines apart from other T-shirt sites is the use of paintings to display the t-shirts. While I plan to keep these, I also want to add photo galleries for each design. Who will be my models? Well, I’m hoping YOU will. If you’ve purchaced a Donkeyshines t-shirt, and don’t mind showing your mug on the internet, send pics of yourself wearing them to: photos@donkeyshines.com. Please be sure to say what size you are wearing in the photo. If you want to tell me other details such as where the photo was taken, feel free. The example below is of someone wearing a men’s medium forrest green Nessie in a Fishbowl shirt. It was taken in Subic Bay, Philippines!

X-mas is Coming!

It may be a little early to announce this, but Donkeyshines will “soon” be selling X-mas cards. Probably by early to mid November, we’ll offer packs of 10 and 20 of 2 different designs. Why will a t-shirt store be selling greeting cards? Why only for X-mas? Look for answers to these questions and more over the next month or so. Here’s a sneak preview of one of the designs-
