Webcomic Release!

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Boy, I have been MIA. Is this really my first post since March 17? Anyway, there’s a good reason for my absence. I’ve really been working hard to finish up the webcomic so that I can launch and make it open to the public. Well, I am happy to say that it is finally ready! Go to Mirthless Myth and check it out!

Well, that’s really all I have to say at the moment. I’m somewhat exhausted right now. Anyway, keep tuning in to Mirthless Myth for new pages every Monday. And expect more posts here at the Donkeyblog now that things are settled with the comic.

Turtle Painting

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I have been really busy with the webcomic and have had little time for much else. However, I did finally finish the painting for the Jesus Turtle. here’s a detail of my favorite part:

turtle-paint-detail

I’m especially proud of the hair. For some reason, I have always had problems painting hair and only recently have I gotten a handle on it. Anyway you can see the entire painting here. Soon, I will start the painting for the Dino Volleyball shirt. However, I must concentrate on finishing page 5 of my new webcomic. I am also still trying to think of a name for the series and website. I will keep y’all posted.

New Year, New Low Prices

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

I’ve always considered the prices at Donkeyshines to be fair, reflecting the cost of the high quality blanks I use. Part of the reason costs are so relatively high is that I print small runs of about 100 shirts at a time, as this is all I can really afford. $24.99 for silky soft, environmentally nice bamboo/organic cotton blend is pretty reasonable, as is $19.99 for soft, fashion-forward cotton shirts. When all costs were considered, I wasn’t even making 50% profit on these as it was. And if these prices were too high for people, I always had a Shirt of the Week for $16.99, and regularly offered high % -off coupons. However, towards the end of last year, I found a new cotton fashion blank that is about 25% cheaper than the ones I had previously been using. This will allow me to perminently lower prices on all my shirts from now on. Even though the prices of the bamboo blanks haven’t come down, I can lower the selling price of these because of the money I am saving on the cotton shirts!  So from now on, The cotton shirts are going to sell for $16.99 and the bamboo shirts will sell for $19.99. By the way, the new cotton blanks I’m using are from Next Level Apparel, and they are not only less expensive than the ones I was previously using, but they’re softer and fit better as well. I’m so excited about the new shirts, that I have already put in an order for my latest design:

Look for brand-new Dino Volleyball shirts by the end of this month! Also, in 2010, look to see some classic designs like Donkey Pegasus and Gorilla Duck graduate from cotton to bamboo!

New T-Shirt: Jesus Turtle Now Available!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

It took a bit longer than usual, but the Jesus Turtle is now available at the low introductory price of $16.99!

jesusturtle200

It’s printed on super-soft Next Level Apparel shirts, which I actually like much more than any other 100% cotton tees I’ve tried. All of their styles are side-seemed and they are  roomier and less tight. Much easier to breathe, and it doesn’t cut off arm circulation like some other fashion shirts out there!

In addition to the new T-shirt, I am once again selling Holiday Cards, at a reduced price of $15.98 for a 10-pack.

Also, from now until the end of the year, you can get 40% of of EVERYTHING in the store with coupon code: donkey40. So come to Donkeyshines and do some X-mas shopping!

So I’m Planning to Start a Webcomic

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

It’s kind of strange that I haven’t done this yet. As a kid, I loved comic books, and really wanted to be a comic book artist when I grew up. I made up all sorts of superheros that were rip-offs of my favorite Marvel characters.  Superheroes were how I first got interested in drawing the human figure. Yet at some point between junior high school and now, I stopped collecting, reading and drawing comics. I never lost my appreciation for them, but chose to consume them in their feature film format. I think I would have still considered making my own stories, but the idea was daunting. Since I stopped reading them, I lost touch with the current comic art styles, and forgot how the rhythm of graphic story telling worked. My own painting and drawing styles didn’t seem practical for sequential art, and I figured it would take me a month to do each panel in that way.  Also, I never liked prospective drawing, so drawing exteriors and material environments for my characters seemed tedious and unenjoyable. Plus it didn’t seem realistic that I could pitch a graphic novel idea and get someone to publish it. But recently, I discovered Webcomics. Obviously, these aren’t new, but I was always prejudiced against them. I moronically thought that any comic worth reading would be in print format, and that digital publication was for amateurs. Now I realize that nothing could be further from the truth. The freedom that comes with self-publishing on the internet means artists are limited only by their imaginations (and not by this cliche I used to describe it). And since opening my mind, I’ve discovered comics that are way more wacky and original than anything I’ve ever seen printed on paper. One pleasant surprise was the huge number of different art styles out there. I was especially happy to see that some artists totally get away with fudging perspective lines when drawing backgrounds! They don’t even use rulers sometimes. Most webcomics are much more raw and unpolished than printed ones, partially because web artists have to do everything themselves, and often churn out multiple finished pages in a week. I’m still not sure if I can work as fast as these other artists, and I’m not even sure what style I will adopt to tell my story. Come to think of it, I don’t even know what my story is going to be just yet. Or even what kind of story. Oh, and then I gotta build another website. And then I gotta maintain that website. And find a way to get people to it. And find a way to make them keep coming back! I guess I have a lot of work to do…

Worst Volleyball Players Ever

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I made a new t-shirt design this week:

dino-volleyball

I am not sure what I will do with this design. I may enter it at Uneetee, or I might just print it directly myself. I am waiting to hear back on a few more price quotes for blanks. Depending on which I decide to go with will determine which new design I print. If not this new design, then I will finally print the Jesus Turtle design which did not win at Uneetee. We will see…

Hitching a Ride

Friday, October 9th, 2009

So it took a week, but I finished that Squirrel T-shirt design:

squirrel-flight

I am pretty happy with the way it came out. I like the little feet. I am still slow drawing in CS4 Illustrator, but I am getting better. I think I might start doing the initial drawings the old fashioned way on paper, and then scanning them in to trace. Anyway, I hope you all like the design. I am going to enter this design at Uneetee, and I will post here again when it is available for voting.

General Update

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

There’s a lot going on at Donkeyshines these days. We recently released some cozy, cold-weather clothes with our Robot Penguin Hoodies and our Donkey Pegasus Hats. Now, I am working on a new top secret T-shirt design featuring some squirrels. Even though its top secret, I’ll show you a sketch:

regsquirrelsketch

What’s this little guy doing? Looks like he’s hanging from something. Looks like he’s in trouble! I guess we’ll have to wait until the design is completed to find out what’s going on.

The other thing I have been doing is searching for new blank tees to print on. I really love the Continental bamboo shirts, and the Royal Apparel 50/50 shirt used for the Black Cats design is nice, but I am thinking about alternatives to the American Apparel style I currently use for many of my designs. I like some things about AA, of course. It is nice that their shirts are soft and made in the USA in sweatshop-free factories and all that. I’m just not so sure about the way they fit. On me, they are tight in the chest, but then bag out by the waste instead of tapering. Some of my customers find them too tight as well. I really love how the bamboo shirts drape, and ideally, I would print all my designs on them. The problem is, the Continental line only has a few colors. Also, bamboo is more expensive. So now I am looking into other companies with bamboo lines such as Jerico and Onno Textiles, as well as some other cotton lines from Next Level Apparel, Royal, and Kavio. It might seem tedious, but I actually enjoy shopping for blanks! I look forward to getting samples from all these companies and being able to compare the softness and colors. Its gunna be awesome.

Robot Penguin Hoodies Have Arrived!

Friday, September 18th, 2009

So it took a bit longer than expected, but the Robot Penguin Hoodies are finally ready and available to buy! Here’s what they look like:

robopenhoodwomen1robopenhoodmen

I am pretty happy with the way they came out! The design is nice and big, and the silver ink is especially shiny! I lucked out when Printmojo told me my original choice for blanks was no longer available, as I really love these Independent Trading Co. Standard Supply sweatshirts. They are nice and soft, they fit well, and the sleeves are a perfect length. The Robot Penguin Hoodies are printed on a unisex style, sizes Xsmall all the way up through XXlarge. We suggest the Xmall for the petite ladies out there, as the these run somewhat big. And here’s the best part…

For a limited time (til the end of September), you can get these shiny Robot Penguin Hoodies for the redonkelous intro price of $29.99! Yes, you heard me right! For about two weeks, you can get these for $5 more than the cost of a t-shirt! But then even the “real” price is pretty damn good. Starting October 1, they will go up to a measly $34.99.

Oh, one other thing I should mention. I only printed 102 of these things!  I already took one for me, one for the wife, and one for sis, so that means there are only 99 of these left to buy! If ya want one, ya better hurry, cuz I currently have no plans for a second run!

Fall and Beyond

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

So after taking many more months than I expected to complete the Black Cats painting, I suddenly find myself confronted with my least favorite season: The fall. Where did summer go? Perhaps it seemed short because June  behaved like April. Many people I know are glad to see the blistering days of August go, and are looking forward to the mild temperatures and the changing of the leaves. I’m not exactly sure why it is that I can’t get on board with this.  As a cyclist, I prefer the extreme heat of summer to the wind and rain of the fall, but it isn’t just about the weather. Or the shrinking of daylight. For me there’s also this conditioned emotional response to the coming of September, which I associate with the beginning of the school year. Now, I have not been a student for many years, but as the crickets began to chirp in mid-August, I still get that feeling of anxiety that comes with vanishing freedom. When you are in school, summer is about freedom and fall is about the end of that freedom. Of course there was also excitement, triggered by the purchase of new school clothes, and an attempt at a fresh start. There may be new pretty girls in your class, or at least ones that don’t remember how dorky you were last year. They won’t recognize you with your new carpenter jeans rolled up to your ankle, and your carefully blow-dried and gelled mullet. Anyway, now that I am happily married, the nostalgia of the “new hot girl possibilities” has vanished, but for some reason the anxiety of the “end of freedom” still lingers.

Usually, I just sort of suffer through the fall, but this year I decided to give myself reasons to look forward to it. As a guy who loves to design and wear t-shirts, I was always sad when summer ended and I had to cover them up with more layers. That is why I decided to make my own layers! Just yesterday, I finally put it that order for Robot Penguin hoodies. I thought this design worked well on a full zip sweatshirt, with each penguin on one side of the zipper. They tell me that these could be ready within a week and a half, but they could take a bit longer. I’m printing on Independent Trading Co blanks, and this is a new vendor for Printmojo. I won’t mind too much if it takes two weeks or longer, I’ll just be excited to get them!

Of course, when fall becomes winter, even a hoodie must hide under an insulated jacket. However, nothing has to cover up a toasty winter knit cap! That is why I am printing the Donkey Pegasus on a stylish, 100% acrylic hat. The garment with be black because black goes with everything, and stands out  against the snow. I’m going to use embroidery instead of screen printing, and I am trying to choose between metallic gold or silver thread.

While the silver is more subtle, I was thinking it might be nice to go with gold this time. If you have a preference, tweet me your vote!
